Asia dominates Alipay’s overseas in-stores transactions during Golden Week

By Elena Owyong

Asia recorded the highest overseas Alipay in-store transaction volume during this year’s Golden Week

Asia has topped mobile payment platform Alipay’s overseas in-store transaction volume during China’s Golden Week, according to figures released by Alipay.

The Golden Week is a week-long public holiday from 1 October to 7 October, in China.

This is the second year Asia takes the top spot in Alipay’s list of top 10 Golden Week destinations by transaction volume.

Among the top 10 destinations, Hong Kong is ranked first, followed by Thailand and Japan in the second and third positions respectively. Both Hong Kong and Thailand retained their positions from last year, while Japan rose to the third this year.

At the same time, Alipay doubled its overseas in-store transactions during this year’s holiday, as compared to last year.

Figures from Alipay show that Europe recorded the fastest growth in Alipay use as compared to last year. Of which, Switzerland’s transaction volume grew by 27 times, while Spain and Cambodia’s transaction volume increased by 14 times.

According to Alipay’s spokesperson, the growth in these European destinations can be attributed to the mass rollout of Alipay to merchants across the region over the last 12 months.
