Auckland Airport hosts workshops to target Chinese travelers

New Zealand gateway Auckland Airport has organized a week of workshops to help its staff learn more about Chinese visitors and deliver better services for Chinese tourists, currently New Zealand’s fastest-growing tourist segment.

Auckland Airport General Manager of Aeronautical and Commercial Glenn Wedlock said: “China is one of the world’s leading economies and a huge growth opportunity for New Zealand. We have experienced impressive growth in Chinese arrivals during the Chinese New Year period, with 30% year-on-year growth in the … January and February period.”

“These workshops will provide staff across the board at Auckland Airport with increased knowledge of how best to interact with our Chinese visitors, ensuring that we in turn provide the best possible traveling experience for them.”

The workshops, which began on May 20, will involve employees from the airport’s retail and commercial teams and from its aeronautical operations arm, who will receive intensive training in Chinese communication styles from TravConsult, a firm specializing in international customer service and tourism development.

Trevor Lee, Managing Director of TravConsult, said he is impressed with how the airport has approached the workshops.

“The airport has identified key touch points when Chinese tourists are traveling through … and has ensured that staff from all of these areas are involved in the workshops.

“These workshops will make the interactions at these touch points more seamless and more enjoyable for the Chinese traveler and they highlight the airport’s dedication to catering for the Chinese tourism market. This is a win-win for everyone involved.”
