Adelaide Airport releases RFP for duty free in its terminal expansion

By Hibah Noor

In addition to duty free and other shops, Adelaide Airport will be increasing the food and beverage selection for domestic and international travelers

International travelers will be pleased to find a greatly expanded duty free store

Adelaide Airport recently began its AUD$165 million (US$117.26million) terminal expansion. Expected to open in 2021, the new expansion seeks to improve a number of areas for travelers, with particular attention being paid to an improved arrivals and departures experience for international travelers.

This is the largest improvement of the facility since the completion of the current terminal in 2005. The terminal expansion will increase the terminal’s overall footprint by 16,500 square meters. The total domestic and international retail footprint will increase by more than 80% to 7,257 square meters.

In its first expansion since opening in 2005, this terminal will see an increase of 16,500 square meters

Improving the traveler experience is an important aspect of this expansion, and it will also offer a higher capacity

The new terminal will offer a significantly upgraded shopping and dining experience for both domestic and international travelers, with the expansion of the duty free space in International arrivals and departures to be a major focus.

The airport has just announced a request for proposals (RFP) for its duty free space.

Adelaide Airport Head of Retail and Commercial (Terminal), John Pearce, said the RFP is part of an ambitious 30-month rollout of commercial opportunities linked to the expansion. “Adelaide Airport is unique in Australia in having both international and domestic passengers dwell and circulate to a large extent under the same roof,” Mr Pearce said. “The retail opportunities to be made progressively available represent a rare opportunity for retailers to establish a significant presence at one of Australia’s fastest growing airports across a broad range of categories from duty free and specialty retail to food & beverage, news/books and souvenirs.

“We’re inviting ‘best in class’ duty free operators to operate in the redeveloped and upgraded terminal and terminal precinct at Adelaide Airport.

“The duty free concession at Adelaide Airport is the largest single retail contract. As a result, we’re seeking an experienced duty free operator with a proven track record in category growth, innovation and partnership to potentially operate three retail spaces across the terminal.”

As part of the RFP for the duty free space, Adelaide Airport is encouraging prospective operators to consider bidding for domestic airside premium fashion sites, an international airside food and beverage site, and an international airside news and books site.

Adelaide Airport is ranked the fifth busiest airport in Australia with more than 8 million passengers annually, and is regarded as having one of the most modern terminal designs in the country.
