Orlando International Airport registers double-digit growth in August

By Ronnie Lovler

Orlando International Airport registered double-digit growth in August, compared with the same period last year as overall traffic rose by more than 11 percent, lead by strong domestic growth, according to airport authorities.

Compared to August of 2016, the airlines have added more than 2,100 domestic flights into the Orlando airport and more than 260 international flights, leading to the boost in numbers.

“For the peak summer vacation travel months, we recorded a 9 percent increase in overall traffic, which is a phenomenal rate of growth,” said Phil Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “This kind of achievement would not be possible if it were not for our airline partners who have increased seats and service while introducing exciting new routes into this market.”

The airlines registering the largest gains in service were U.S. carriers Frontier, Southwest and Spirit and Chile’s LATAM. Virgin America also doubled the amount of flights it offered in August.

Overall, the August figures showed an 11.82 percent increase in domestic traffic, compared with the previous year, with 3,236,989 passengers arriving and departing Orlando International Airport. International traffic was up 7.29 percent with 594,698 passengers for the same period.

Total passenger volume was up 11.09 percent with a total of 3,831,687 travelers, pushing Orlando International Airport to over 43.8 million passengers on a rolling 12-month basis, which the facility says is another record.

Orlando International Airport is the second busiest airport in Florida and the 13th busiest in the United States, with more than 43 million annual passengers.
