Countdown begins to Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup 2017

Last year’s Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup saw South Africa’s Gavin Lerena leading the Rest of the World team to victory

The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup returns to Ascot on August 12 as one of the most eagerly awaited highlights of the UK summer sporting season.

The world’s premier international jockeys’ competition draws top riders from all corners of the globe to the famous racecourse and is a sell-out occasion.

The points-based competition is played out between four teams, each comprising three top riders representing Europe, Great Britain and Ireland, Rest of the World and The Girls, in a six-race showdown. Last year, South Africa’s Gavin Lerena rode two winners en-route to leading the Rest of the World team to victory.

2017 promises to produce another thrilling contest after the announcement of a stellar line-up of riders.

Andre De Vries, Jamie Spencer, Kerrin McEvoy and Emma-Jayne Wilson, a quartet of the world’s finest jockeys, will captain the four teams for this weekend’s showpiece.

Kerrin McEvoy is making his second appearance at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and will captain the Rest of The World Team. The Australian has ridden three winners at Royal Ascot, and captured the Melbourne Cup for the second time in November.

Anthony Delpech and Japan’s Keita Tosaki are both making their Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and British debuts.

Delpech was crowned champion jockey in South Africa last season and adds to his titles in 1998/1999 and 2002/03. Tosaki has been the Japan Racing Association’s top rider for the last three years.

The Ladies team includes Canada’s Emma-Jayne Wilson, the most successful female jockey of all time in her homeland, who is riding at her sixth Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. She captained The Girls Team to a historic victory in the 2015 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and will be in charge again this year. Australia’s Michelle Payne became the first female rider to win the Melbourne Cup in 2015 on 100/1 outsider Prince of Penzance.

Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman & CEO Colm McLoughlin said: “The line-up looks as strong as in any previous year. We are particularly looking forward to welcoming those making their Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup debuts and creating new ambassadors for this truly international event.

“The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup provides racegoers with a unique opportunity to see some of the world’s most accomplished riders brought together at an iconic venue in the true spirit of international competition.”

After the racing, a live music concert will be staged, which has become known as the Party in the Paddock. Craig David headlines this year's concert and he will be joined by All Saints and Welsh rock band Feeder. Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills will also keep racegoers entertained.
