Boston Logan International Airport awards concessions to Marketplace

Boston’s Logan International Airport celebrated two big developments in the past week

Logan International Airport in Boston has had two exciting developments in the past week, unveiling the newly renovated and expanded Terminal E and the awarding of its concessions contract.

The Terminal E redevelopment project will help to enhance passenger experiences throughout the terminal, allow for larger aircraft and a greater selection of international destinations, with a space expanded by 8,826 square meters.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) voted to award the 10-year contract to MarketPlace Logan LLC for the management of the majority of the concessions operations at the airport, with development under the new contract expected to begin in mid-2018. Currently, the four terminals of the airport are managed under multiple concessions contracts, with Airmall and Westfield Corp. holding the majority. MarketPlace is planning a $14 million investment to upgrade concession facilities and has stated its intention to introduce new local vendors.

The RFP was announced last July, with the top three choices narrowed down in January. The process was stringent, with priority placed on providing diverse offerings with a balance between local, regional, national and international retail and food/beverage brands. Requirements and parameters were put forward in the RFP to create opportunities to encourage Disadvantaged Business Enterprises; create opportunities to encourage Minority-owned and Women-Owned Enterprises; ensure labor needs and requirements are properly addressed and handled; and implementing a Receiving and Distribution “Commissary” program to smooth out arrival and distribution of goods while reducing curbside traffic and streamlining critical security screening procedures.

Glynn. “Consolidating our concessions management under a singular contract with industry leader MarketPlace will ensure consistency, continuity and choice for the millions of passengers that travel through Logan every year.”

MarketPlace, which is headquartered in Boston, has more than 20 years of experience successfully developing and managing concessions programs at airports across the country, including Philadelphia International Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport.
